GLASS-GLC产品以1982～2015年的全球陆表特征参量数据集（GLASS CDR）为数据源，借助谷歌地球引擎（Google Earth Engine）平台进行开发，涵盖耕地、森林、草原、灌木、苔原、裸地和冰雪七大土地覆盖类别。基于全季节普适样本库，在有限样本稳定分类理论的支撑下，GLASS-GLC数据集采集了全球均匀分布、高代表性和典型性的上万个大型一致样本（Huge homogeneous samples，H-homo），并结合滤波重建的数据立方体和四维时空谱特征立方体，以及分类后时空一致性后处理，有效确保了数据产品的可靠性和地物判别的有效性。经全球独立样本库检验，GLASS-GLC数据集年平均精度达82.81％，同时还能向用户提供详细的制图不确定性空间分布图。
GLASS-GLC反映了长达34年的全球土地覆盖时空变化格局，包括热带地区耕地增加，北半球森林增加以及亚洲的草地减少等显著现象。定量分析表明，在土地覆盖显著变化地区，人类活动对环境的影响水平高达25.49％。分析结果还显示，人类活动影响与植被面积增加有很强的相关性。分析同已有土地覆盖数据产品相比，GLASS-GLC数据集具有高精度、高一致性、高可比性、更丰富类别信息和更长时间覆盖范围的特点，填补了当今世界已有制图产品的空白。
