The Broadcom BCM5396 device is a highly integrated solution ideally
suited for standalone Gigabit Ethernet switches and Gigabit Ethernet
control plane and backplane applications. It combines all the functions of
a high-speed switch system, including packet buffer, SerDes, media
access controllers, address management, and a nonblocking switch
fabric into a single 0.13 µm CMOS device.
The BCM5396 complies with IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, and 802.3x
specifications, including the MAC control, pause frame, and autonegotiation subsections, providing compatibility with all industrystandard Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet devices.

The BCM5396 and BCM5389 product families include highly-integrated Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch devices
featuring varying port counts of fully-integrated 1000 Mbps SerDes/Serial Gigabit Media Independent Interface
(SGMII). An additional management port is configurable to GMII, Reduced GMII (RGMII), or MII (RvMII). These
products integrate packet buffer, media access controllers (MACs), address management, and nonblocking
switch fabric into a single 0.13µ CMOS device running on 2.5V/1.2V power supplies. They are ideally suited for
a variety of applications where port density and power economy are key design criteria.
