Our solution consists of three main sections. In the first, we propose a macroscopic
(continuum) model for the relationship between traffic flow, density, and mean speed. In addition to an improved justifiability over traditional empirical models, ours also allows for a straightfoward adjustment to reflect the percentage of self-driving/cooperative vehicles present. We find that at a given density of cars on the road, traffic flow and average speed increase fairly uniformly with that parameter, and show how an increase in overall number of cars on the road is likely to negate this beneficial effect.
