近些年来，集中BBU（BaseBand Unit，基带单元）、拉远RRU（Radio Remote Unit，射频拉远单元）的C-RAN（Centralized, Cooperative, Cloud & Clean - Radio Access Network）网络部署在全球许多国家和地区得到了越来越广泛的应用，但受CPRI（Common Public Radio Interface，通用公共无线电接口）的限制和现有BBU/RRU接口带宽要求高的影响，若沿用CPRI进行前传组网，则会限制C-RAN更大规模的部署；另外面向4.5G及未来5G的无线技术也对现有CPRI提出了新的挑战。本白皮书旨在解决这些问题，提出了NGFI（Next Generation Fronthaul Interface，下一代前传接口），并列出多种可选的接口功能划分方案。
